About Us
Burrowing Owl Conservation Network began as group of dedicated birders, conservationists, biologists, and concerned citizens who came together for the protection and restoration of local burrowing owls and their habitats.
Known as the Friends of East Bay Owls, we began our journey to increase conservation efforts for burrowing owls in the East San Francisco Bay Area. Over time, the situation evolved from a local effort to a California- and North American -wide movement focused on restoring habitat, increasing populations and reaching out to communities for the benefit of burrowing owls and ecosystems.
Our Mission
Burrowing Owl Conservation Network advocates for the protection and restoration of the Western Burrowing Owl and promotes the preservation and careful management of habitat to prevent loss, foster healthy populations, and maintain intact natural communities for an ecologically sound future.
Over the last 30 years the western burrowing owl has been under siege from habitat loss in Canada, Mexico and the United States. It was once described as a common species known to almost all California residents, but over time populations have dwindled and in some regions been driven to extinction. We believe burrowing owls are vital to maintaining healthy, functioning ecosystems.
Our Vision
We aim to reverse a trend that currently promotes extirpation of the Western Burrowing Owl and establish a plan by which municipalities embrace Burrowing Owls and Sustainable Development for the benefit of open spaces, wildlife, people and ecosystems.
We will strive to achieve this through:
- Educating communities, performing on-the-ground conservation work, garnering land owner cooperation, championing progressive burrowing owl and habitat management policies and laws, increasing scientific research, and fostering appreciation.
- A continual effort to expand our programs, develop publications and establish a website that serves as a complete Burrowing Owl resource for people of all ages.
